Medicine News - New NHS patient treatment rating system

Posted by GetIntoMedicine 2012

Patients will soon be able to give their feedback on their treatment during hospital stays in England - and for the feedback to be made public.

Under new proposals, set to begin in April 2013, patients will be asked to complete a questionnaire-style rating system which will ask questions such as whether they would recommend a particular hospital or the treatment received to a friend or family members. This information will then be published, it is believed anonymously, so that other patients and members of the public can review the level of care given.

The new policy was developed in line with the Nursing Quality Care forum recommendations, and is the first - and so far the only- recommendation which the Government has committed itself to implementing.

It is believed the system will improve transparency within the NHS.

As a medical school applicant:

  • What do you think of these new proposals? Are they good, or bad and why?
  • What do you think will be the likely effect and outcome of these proposals?
  • Why has it been necessary for the government to do this?
  • Can you see any problems in it's implementation?
  • What effect, if any, will this have on the public's perception of the NHS and those who work within the NHS?
